If you're anything like me, you may have considered upgrading to the latest Apple Watch, the Series 7!
With anything Apple, you only need to watch a product release or advert & think "How have I managed to live my life without this?" Apple are pretty good at making their new products seem like your life won't go on without it. This is no different with the latest Apple Watch. So do you really need it? Well, first let's take a look at some of the features.
Series 7 Bigger Screen
Apple has tried hard to increase the screen size, while not dramactically increasing the size of the watch its self. They've done this by reducing the border size by 40%. Waht does this mean for you? Well for one, it's much easier to type - especially with a QWERTY keyboard. In fairness, I have a series 5 Apple Watch & fat fingers, so sometimes it can be pretty frustrating trying to navigate around the watch. A bigger display area will fix this, as well as looking great.
If you're using an Apple Watch Series 3, the latest model has 50% more screen area so you'll definitely notice a difference. The larger display is always-on, meaning you don’t need to tap on the screen to see information.
Increased Protection
If you’re also like me and tend to be quite destructive, the Series 7 might be for you. The latest model features a crack resistant crystal screen which is twice as thick than the series 6, while also boasting IP6X Dust resistant & WR50 Water resistance - this comes in handy if you’re a particulary active person or one for extreme sports.
Health Features
The series 7 has no new health features over the Series 6. The Blood Oxygen Level measurement was introduced on the series 6 & given the past few years is quite a relevant and useful feature. You can take on-demand readings as well as background readings as well. The ECG feature is still present and also capable of generating an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram.
Charging
Personally, this would be one the most important features for me. The Series 7 will go from 0-80% charge in around 45 minutes which is 33% percent quicker than the previous model. Even better, though, is that just 8 minutes of charge will power 8 hours of sleep tracking. Which means by the time you’ve taken the dog out for a wee, brushed your teeth, locked up the house and climbed into bed, you’ll have enough charge for the night!
So, should you buy the Series 7 Apple Watch? For me it comes down to two things:
- If you have an Apple Watch older than the series 6, it’s probably worth it. I’m currently using a series 5 & I’m also heavy-handed which means this watch is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. While there isn’t many new features over the 6, it is a bigger upgrade from the older models. As tech gets older it becomes slower & new software becomes less compatible - so its worth keeping up to a certain extent.
- How important are the new features to you? For some, these features will play a big part of their life, for others not so much and there is no real need to upgrade just yet. Like I mentioned earlier, I like to wear my watch as much as possible and I have fat fingers, so id make use of the faster charging times & the bigger screen area & the newly introduced QWERTY keyboard
